WHY IT MADE THE COLLECTION

WHY IT MADE THE COLLECTION

Hidden in the jungle of a private Maldivian island, Soneva Fushi is the Maldives at its most imaginative: extraordinary villas, exceptional dining and a playful, shoes-off spirit throughout.

THE EXPERIENCE

THE EXPERIENCE

Hidden among dense jungle on one of the Maldives’ largest natural islands, Soneva Fushi has always done things differently. Days are gloriously unscripted: snorkel with manta rays, cycle barefoot along sandy jungle paths, watch dolphins at sunset or disappear to a deserted sandbank before returning for dinner beneath the stars. There’s a wonderful sense of imagination running through everything here, from memorable dining experiences and the open-air cinema to the observatory and legendary chocolate and ice-cream rooms. Yet beneath the playfulness is real care for the island and the reef around it. It’s luxurious without ever feeling conventional: barefoot, creative and full of the kind of experiences that stay with you long after you leave.

Hayley's Take

hAYLEY'S TAKE

Soneva Fushi is one of those rare Maldives resorts where I'd actually worry that a week wasn't long enough. I love that it still feels like a genuine jungle island, but behind the barefoot simplicity there's an incredible amount happening: manta rays, diving, astronomy, glassblowing, brilliant food and probably one of the best setups for families in the Maldives. It's playful and imaginative without losing that feeling of being somewhere genuinely special.

SUGGESTED ITINERARY

Sri Lanka → Soneva Fushi Spend 8–10 nights exploring Sri Lanka, travelling through the Cultural Triangle, tea country, Yala and the south coast, then fly via Malé for 5–7 nights at Soneva Fushi. I'd actually favour 7 nights here if budget allows. This isn't somewhere I'd use purely for recovering beside the pool after a touring itinerary. There's enough diving, marine life, food, wellness and experiences to make Soneva a significant part of the trip in its own right.
