NIHI Sumba is the kind of place that turns a beach stay into a genuine adventure. Set on a wildly beautiful stretch of Sumba’s coastline, days might mean riding horses through the surf, hiking to hidden waterfalls, surfing the legendary Occy’s Left or heading inland to discover the island’s villages, traditions and extraordinary landscapes. The villas are spectacular, but NIHI’s real luxury is the freedom it gives you to experience Sumba. Days can be as active or as slow as you like, from the remarkable Spa Safari to long lunches overlooking the ocean and sunset rides along the beach. NIHI is exactly the kind of hotel I created the Collection to showcase. The villas are incredible, but I'd come here for Sumba itself: the horses, empty beaches, waterfalls, villages and that sense that you're somewhere genuinely wild. I also love that the relationship with the local community goes much deeper than tourism. This isn't somewhere I'd book for someone wanting conventional five-star luxury; it's for someone who wants to come home talking about what they did and felt, rather than simply where they stayed.

SUGGESTED ITINERARY
Bali → Sumba I'd break the journey with 3 nights in Ubud, then take the short flight to Tambolaka for 5 nights at NIHI. Sumba needs time to sink in, so I wouldn't go for less than four nights.
