But what really earns its place in our Collection is what surrounds the luxury: former farmland being returned to indigenous forest, local craftsmanship woven throughout the lodge and a stay intrinsically connected to the protection of Rwanda's mountain gorillas. Wilderness says more than 100,000 indigenous trees have been planted across the wider Bisate restoration project.

Trek into Volcanoes National Park and spend an extraordinary hour with one of its habituated mountain gorilla families, one of the world's great wildlife encounters. The lodge is immediately adjacent to the national park rather than inside it. Gorilla treks depart via the park headquarters.

There are wildlife experiences that are incredible, and then there are those you know you'll talk about for the rest of your life. Trekking to Rwanda's mountain gorillas is firmly in the latter. I love that Bisate doesn't make you choose between conservation and serious luxury either: after a muddy morning in the forest, you're coming home to your own fireplace, hot tub, beautiful food and one of the most extraordinary views in Rwanda.
