WHY IT MADE THE COLLECTION

WHY IT MADE THE COLLECTION

A serene riverside retreat hidden in Kyoto’s forested hills, where centuries-old Japanese traditions, extraordinary craftsmanship and deeply considered hospitality create a rare sense of stillness and place.

THE EXPERIENCE

THE EXPERIENCE

The experience starts before you even check in, with a boat journey along the Oi River to reach the hotel. Once there, everything slows down: gardens, river views, beautiful Japanese interiors, seasonal food and experiences that bring you closer to Kyoto’s culture. It’s peaceful and immersive, while still giving you easy access to explore Arashiyama and Kyoto beyond.

Hayley's Take

hAYLEY'S TAKE

This is the Kyoto I’d want after a busy few days exploring the city. You’re still immersed in its history and culture, but everything slows down the moment you get on that boat. I love that the luxury here comes from privacy, craftsmanship and access to experiences you’d struggle to recreate independently. It feels completely rooted in its surroundings rather than like an international luxury hotel dropped into Japan.

SUGGESTED ITINERARY

Tokyo → Kyoto → HOSHINOYA Kyoto → Japanese Alps I’d explore Kyoto fully first, then finish with 2 nights at HOSHINOYA rather than using it as your sightseeing base. It turns the end of your Kyoto stay into an experience in itself before heading into the mountains.
