Some hotels become famous because they’re luxurious.

Others become famous because they’re unlike anything else.

Jade Mountain falls firmly into the second category.

Perched high above Saint Lucia’s southwest coast, every sanctuary has been designed around one view: the UNESCO-listed Pitons rising from the Caribbean Sea. Rather than framing that view with glass, architect Nick Troubetzkoy removed the fourth wall altogether, creating open-air sanctuaries that blur the line between indoors and out. It’s a design philosophy that has become one of the most recognisable in luxury travel.

Why It’s a Canopy Icon

At The Canopy Collection, we look for hotels with a genuine sense of place.

Jade Mountain simply couldn’t exist anywhere else.

From the locally sourced materials used throughout the resort to the architecture that embraces the landscape rather than competing with it, every decision feels rooted in Saint Lucia itself.

The Sanctuaries

There are no standard hotel rooms here.

Each sanctuary is individually designed, reached by its own private bridge and positioned to maximise the uninterrupted views of the Pitons. Most feature private infinity pools that appear to flow directly into the Caribbean beyond, while the open-fronted design means the sea breeze becomes part of the experience. There are no televisions or clocks competing for your attention, just the changing light across the mountains from sunrise to sunset.

It’s worth saying that this style of accommodation isn’t for everyone. If you love sleeping with air conditioning and everything completely enclosed, there may be better choices. But if waking up to one of the Caribbean’s most iconic views is your idea of luxury, it’s difficult to think of anywhere quite like it.

Beyond the Hotel

One of Jade Mountain’s greatest strengths is its location.

Guests also have full access to the facilities at its sister property, Anse Chastanet, including two beautiful beaches, excellent snorkelling straight from the shore, a PADI dive centre, hiking trails and several restaurants. That combination gives you the privacy of Jade Mountain with plenty to do when you feel like exploring.

Beyond the resort, Saint Lucia offers rainforest hikes, volcanic hot springs, sailing trips and visits to Soufrière, making it one of the Caribbean islands where you’ll genuinely want to leave the hotel from time to time.

Sense of Place

Jade Mountain and Anse Chastanet were designed around the landscape from the start, built into the hillside so that the view, not the building, is the star

Most sanctuaries rely on natural ventilation rather than air conditioning, rainwater is collected and treated on site, wastewater is recycled for irrigation, and the resort has played an important role in protecting the marine reserve surrounding Soufrière. The emphasis has always been on working with the landscape rather than changing it.

The resort also prioritises local employment, local craftsmanship and supporting the surrounding community, helping ensure tourism benefits the island beyond the hotel itself.

Who It’s Perfect For

  • Honeymooners.

  • Couples celebrating a special occasion.

  • Travellers who value architecture as much as luxury.

  • Anyone looking for a Caribbean hotel that feels genuinely unique rather than interchangeable.

Our Verdict

There are plenty of beautiful hotels in the Caribbean.

Very few have become icons.

Jade Mountain isn’t memorable because it’s extravagant. It’s memorable because everything about it has been designed around its setting. Twenty years after opening, it still feels as distinctive as ever, and that’s why it belongs in our collection.
